To benefit from some of the useful properties of ethylene, about 1 – 7% by weight of ethylene monomer is added into the propylene monomer simultaneously in the reactor. The inclusion of the ethylene molecule reduces the polypropylene’s crystalinity producing improved transparency and better strength compared with homopolymers. With the insertion of an ethylene/propylene rubber phase coating at the surface of the semi crystalline homopolymer matrix, the impact copolymer offers improved impact strength compared to the homopolymer or the random copolymer injection grade, at the cost of stiffness.
